‘Ain el-Gezzareen, an Old Kingdom Settlement.

This site has been under study for over ten years and has proved very rewarding.  There was a lot of butchering of food animals, large areas of baking and there has been a large open well at the site.  It was a victualling centre for caravans leaving Egypt and exploring west and south, going from the oasis capital of the time (about 2500 B.C.), and looking for raw materials and trade. Gazzareen was the westernmost settlement of the period in Dakhleh and has provided insights into life and the economy of the period and it’s long distant connections.
