TEMPLE OF AMUN-NAKHT AT ‘AIN BIRBIYEH

A temple built by Augustus Caesar which contains beautifully carved relief decoration, providing new information on the language and religion of this remote corner of the Roman Empire.  As excavation proceeds in the surrounding settlement, mapping and assessment of the site must continue.  Here is also a sub-project to restore a decorated column capital, using non-synthetic materials, and which will serve as a permanent marker of the temple.

It is surrounded by the remains of must have been the largest settlement in the Dakhleh Oasis.
