EXCAVATION OF ROMAN FORTRESS AT EL-QASR

During a quiet morning in Qasr, Prof. Leemhuis realised that a heavy mud brick wall did not belong to the Islamic buildings he had been restoring.  They turn out to be part of a Roman fortress built on the site and called Ta Castra, which is known from classical  texts.  The Roman remains are being excavated, but as they lie directly under the medieval city which must be preserved, they will only be partially opened.
